Celebrating International Walk to School Day

This week we visited Highland Park Elementary to celebrate International Walk to School Day, which is all about helping students make the healthy choice to walk to school by improving pedestrian safety.

In 2012 we’ve made a number of upgrades to the streets around Highland Park, to make it safer for students to walk to and from school. We added an all-way stop, put in new ramps and crosswalks, as well as a speed cushion. These improvements will not only support the health and safety of elementary school students, but also make the street safer and more inviting for the whole neighborhood.

Last week we also announced funding in our 2013-2014 Proposed Budget that’s above and beyond our past funding for Safe Routes to School. We propose to invest $836,000 in additional funds for SRTS, which will allow us to invest in three big projects at three elementary schools: West Woodland, Beacon Hill, and McGilvra elementary in Madison Park.

Thank you to the students and staff at Highland Park Elementary who joined us this week to highlight the importance of healthy transportation options.
